Pirates' Snell eyes personal, team upgrade

Part of improving the Pirates' performance next season, of course, would involve Ian Snell pitching up to his previous level, something he readily acknowledges. He went 7-12 with a 5.42 ERA, the latter an unsightly swelling from his 3.76 ERA from 2007.

Don Baylor, the former Cubs manager who battled cancer in an inspirational way -- hardly surprising for anyone who knows him -- is returning to the majors as Clint Hurdle's hitting coach for the Colorado Rockies.

He’s the all-time major league stolen base leader with 1,406. To put that number in some perspective, the current active stolen base leader in the big leagues is Juan Pierre. He has 429. That means Pierre would have to steal almost a thousand more bases to catch Rickey Henderson.

Former MLB pitcher Dock Ellis dies at 63

Dock Ellis, who broke in with the 1968 Pirates and pitched for four other teams, retired in 1979 with a record of 138-119 -- including a 1970 no-hitter in San Diego that he later claimed to have pitched while on the hallucinogen LSD.
