Baseball originated from a game with a few different names: round ball, town ball, base, and goal ball. This game was first introduced in print in the late 1827, but it was being played by Americans prior to that time. This print version talked about separate teams, four bases arranged in a diamond shape, and the act of getting home and out, which are the basics of the game. Shortly after the first baseball club was formed.

The game first entered US newspapers in 1845. However, the first known written recording of a baseball game actually occurred in Canada about seven years previous to this time. The game that ended up in US newspapers was played by members of the Knickerbockers Club. It was recorded in the New York Morning News and was played in New Jersey.

Alexander Joy Cartwright, a member of the Knickerbockers, is known as the Father of Baseball. He organized the first known baseball team, the New York Knickerbockers. He also wrote the “20 original Rules of Baseball”. These rules added to the form of baseball and included the three strikes rule, three outs in an inning, the umpire, tags and force-outs, and the fair and foul sections.

The addition of the shortstop came later, around 1850, when Daniel Adams recognized the necessity of this person because the balls used were so lightweight they couldn’t be thrown far. The shortstop needed to be able to run them to a person waiting by a base.

Baseball sports memorabilia is also a part of baseball history. Stephan C. Clark purchased an old baseball for five dollars that was found in the attic of a farmhouse in New York. This ball was believed to have belonged to Abner Graves, who was a playmate of Abner Doubleday.

Doubleday was at one point believed to have invented baseball, although we now know this is a myth. Clark planned to display the ball along with other baseball-related items in Cooperstown New York. This display was highly popular and eventually the Baseball hall of fame was formed from this start.

The sport of baseball has an interesting history, above and beyond its origin. Some of the most well-known American historical figures, such as Babe Ruth, have come from this sport. Hopefully baseball will continue to be a great American pastime and will have a future to match its history.

 In Part 1 of Ultimate Pre-game Preparation (published in the last issue of the WBCA Journal), we focused on pre-game preparation from the coachs perspective, and introduced the important differences between emotional arousal and intensity. Every coachs goal is to have each individual player and the collective team play at an optimal level of intensity from tip-off to the final whistle. However, in Part 1, we discussed the importance of separating elevated emotions from elevated intensity. We learned how some players are naturally very reserved, quiet and emotionally even keeled, yet they consistently play at a high intensity. These players are often hurt by the fiery pre-game speech and hype that pulls them out of their optimal emotional arousal level and hurts their ability to stay composed and focused. Other players need the fiery pre-game message and need a high level of pre-game emotional arousal to bring out their best level of focus and intensity. The take home message here is that smart coaches often restrict the collective team pre game speech to team strategy, individual tactical assignments and minor motivational messages, leaving the truly emotionally charged messages to one-on-one individual pre-game meetings. Phil Jackson is renowned for his ability to truly understand the connection between the emotional arousal and intensity of his players on an individual basis. He has often said that he never lets his heart rate get above 100 beats per minute and uses volume control in his voice very, very carefully. Many different factors need to be examined including nutrition, rest levels, stress levels, and the list goes on. However, in my experience, the single biggest contributing factor that contributes to a reduction in composure, focus, intensity and commitment is excessive stress caused by excessive self-imposed pressure. Excessive self-imposed pressure from one game to the next can slowly drain the all important joy and fun components out of the game, so important for sustained motivation and intensity.

Excessive self-imposed pressure will also create fear and anxiety in the athlete; it can cause excessive and uncomfortable game time muscle tightness and nervousness, ruin touch, ruin shooting accuracy and ruin decision making ability. The sources of this pressure can relate to how the athlete feels they will be perceived by the media, the fans, their family, their teammates and themselves, should they not live up to certain expectations. The key to reducing this level of self-imposed pressure is three fold:

1. Realizing that not a single solitary person in the media, fan base, family or even the team can ultimately control their level of composure, focus, intensity, commitment or confidence.

2. The only expectations that matter are the expectations they have for themselves.

3. The expectations they have for themselves should always focus on the controllable elements of a game (i.e. clutch focus, composure, intensity, commitment and confidence, bouncing back very well from any mistakes) vs. statistical averages.

Peak performance is rarely attained with a focus on how hard you can grit your teeth, clench your fists and how determined you are to have a 20 and 10 night to keep your chances of an all-conference selection alive and well. There is nothing wrong with setting lofty individual all-Conference, all-Region, or all-American goals, in addition to lofty statistical goals that fit within the team concept. Those goals are very important goals that should be set and need to be set during the pre-season, but they should have ZERO relevance to pre-game preparation and game-time performance. Players that focus on these uncontrollable goals during pre-game and during the actual game create unnecessary self-imposed pressure. NFL Season Draws Near

 Now that the NFL season is drawing near once again and teams’ training camps get into gear, the time has come for you to review your online football betting know-how.

And it makes a lot of sense to bet on football via the Internet. Internet sports betting “casinos” are convenient; you are much more in control than you are with telephoning some seedy bookie; the best names (which are usually publicly traded companies) are very safe; the customer service is great because Internet casinos are very hungry for your business; you don’t have to be a high stakes player to be wanted; sports betting sites want everybody’s business and they go out of their way to be great for you in order to get it; and, they have more options to offer you.

Now when it comes to strategy: If you’re going to be placing online bets on NFL games, you’ll want to be familiar with NFL key numbers. NFL key numbers have to do with the fact that the majority of all NFL games end with the same margin of victory. What this means for you is it’s very important to study this angle so you can smartly cover the point spreads.

17% of all NFL games end with a three-point victory. Another 10% end with a 7-point victory. 6% end with a 10-point victory and 6% of victories are of six points. 4% of NFL games are won by four points. Thus, 43% of all NFL games will end with just one of these five point margins, and all of those margins fall within the range of what matters for sports betting winning or losing when the factor of point spreads is factored in.

It’s important to understand that these point spreads are most important in the most widely used form of NFL betting, which is the side bet. In these, the team that bookmakers consider to be the underdog get the better point spread, so that the team that’s expected to win also has to win by at least a certain amount of points for you to win your bet. So, for instance, if you bet on the team that does win the game, but the point spread was 5.5 and they only won by five points, you lose your money. (They had to win by at least six points to cover the spread.)

But you can also bet on total points. When you do this, you estimate how many total points you think both teams will score in the game, regardless of who will win or lose. The bookmakers will also do this and they will set the total points number for the game. You bet on whether or not the point total will be Under or Over that total. But this same kind of betting can get more complex and varied with what are called “proposition” bets. With a “prop” bet you can wager on a wide array of factors: what will be the score at halftime; which starting QB will throw for more yards; who will have the most tackles; etc.

For a more long term approach to NFL betting you can try the futures market. With this kind of betting, you wager at the start of the season on who will win a certain division, who will win the AFC/NFC, who will win the Super Bowl.

So as the new NFL season draws near, start contemplating your online betting! It’s fun, and you just may make some serious money.
